The Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport in Owerri, Imo State, is expected to suspend runway operations for about 25 days from October 20, 2026, as the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) prepares to carry out repairs, resurfacing and an extension of the runway.
FAAN said the proposed closure, which is subject to final confirmation, became necessary following the deterioration of sections of the runway, including potholes and extensive surface cracks aggravated by recent heavy rainfall.
In a statement issued on Thursday, October 8, the authority’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire, said the project would involve pavement repairs, crack treatment and resurfacing to restore the runway’s condition and support safe airport operations.
The work is also being planned ahead of the expected rise in passenger numbers and flight movements during the Christmas travel season.
Beyond the repairs, the project will include a runway extension intended to enable the airport to accommodate wide-body aircraft as demand for air travel to the South-East grows. FAAN said the expansion would improve the airport’s capacity and enhance passenger convenience.
The authority advised travellers scheduled to fly through Owerri during the proposed closure to contact their airlines for updates on flight schedules and possible alternative arrangements.
FAAN said it would continue consultations with relevant stakeholders and announce the confirmed closure and reopening dates once they had been finalised. It appealed to passengers and other airport users for their understanding, describing the intervention as part of efforts to maintain safe and reliable airport infrastructure.
