The Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development has firmly denied reports claiming that a fixed or lengthy duration has been agreed upon for the concession of Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu. The Ministry clarified that although proposals have been received from prospective concessionaires, no final decision has been made regarding the terms or length of any concession.
In a statement issued by Tunde Moshood, Special Adviser on Media and Communications to the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo (SAN), the Ministry emphasized that the evaluation of these proposals is still ongoing. Once concluded, the proposals will undergo further scrutiny by the Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission (ICRC) before being submitted to the Federal Executive Council (FEC) for approval.
The Minister reiterated that no fixed duration has been determined at this stage, countering reports suggesting otherwise as “false, unfounded, and designed to create disaffection and mistrust.” He added that the concession initiative is not new, as it originated from previous administrations, and is aimed at revitalizing key airports to meet international standards amidst growing operational costs.
“Many of our airports are currently operating at a loss and require monthly subsidies from the Federal Government. The concession plan is a proactive measure to make these facilities more financially sustainable and globally competitive,” the statement noted.
To ensure transparency, Keyamo had earlier directed the inclusion of aviation labour unions in the negotiation process. The Ministry stressed that due process will be followed rigorously and that all decisions will be made in the best interest of the aviation sector and the Nigerian people.
“Given his background and track record, the Honourable Minister will not allow any irregularities under his watch,” the statement concluded.
