The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has expanded its internationally recognised quality assurance framework to three additional airports after securing ISO 9001:2015 certification for its aeronautical meteorological services at Yola, Osubi and Owerri.
The certification followed a third-party audit of NiMet’s meteorological products, processes and service delivery at the three airports by Certech Inc. Canada, conducted from July 20 to 23, 2026.
NiMet said the assessment found its aeronautical meteorological services compliant with the requirements of the ISO 9001:2015 quality management standard, leading to the issuance of a revised certification.
The development follows a directive by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, to NiMet’s Director-General and Chief Executive Officer, Charles Anosike, to strengthen compliance with safety requirements and support continuous improvement in Nigeria’s standing with the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) and International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).
The ISO certification is significant to aviation operations because reliable weather information is essential for flight planning, take-off and landing decisions, route management and other safety-critical activities.
In a July 26 letter to Anosike, Certech’s Lead Auditor and Director, Frank Strohmeier, confirmed that the objectives of the surveillance audit had been achieved.
“The audit objectives for the surveillance audit were achieved. A systematic process audit was performed with emphasis on risks and objectives per ISO 9001:2015,” Strohmeier said.
With the latest certification, NiMet’s ISO 9001:2015 coverage for aeronautical meteorological services now extends to eight airports across Nigeria. They include Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos; Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano; Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja; Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu; Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa; Yola Modibbo Adama International Airport; Sam Mbakwe International Airport, Owerri; and Osubi Airport.
NiMet had previously secured and maintained ISO certification at five of the airports, with the latest exercise extending the quality management framework to the three additional locations.
The certification is valid for three years and will be subject to annual surveillance and maintenance audits ahead of the next recertification exercise in 2029.
Anosike described the achievement as an important milestone for the agency but stressed that management would continue to improve service standards across its operational locations.
“We are excited about this. Our Quality Management System team, led by Rotimi Adenubi, has been working round the clock to achieve this feat. We are not stopping here as management is focused on overall improvement of standards at all our operational locations,” he said.
The expanded certification provides additional assurance to airlines and other aviation stakeholders that weather information supplied for operational decision-making is produced through documented, controlled and independently audited processes.
NiMet said it would continue to strengthen its quality management systems as part of efforts to improve aeronautical weather services and support higher safety and compliance standards within Nigeria’s aviation sector.
