Incheon International Airport Corporation has expanded its International Remote Baggage Screening (IRBS) programme to cover additional U.S. entry points, introducing the system at Detroit and Minneapolis in a move aimed at streamlining transit for international passengers.
The initiative, developed in partnership with South Korea’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, allows baggage checked at Incheon International Airport to be screened remotely by U.S. authorities before departure. Using high-resolution imaging technology, security agencies including the Transportation Security Administration and Customs and Border Protection can clear luggage in advance, enabling it to be transferred directly to connecting flights upon arrival.
The rollout builds on an earlier pilot launched on the Incheon–Atlanta route and marks a broader shift in how transit security is handled, replacing the traditional requirement for passengers to reclaim and recheck their baggage at U.S. airports. With the new system in place, minimum connection times at both Detroit Metropolitan Airport and Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport are expected to drop by at least 20 minutes, easing congestion and improving the overall passenger experience.
Airlines including Delta Air Lines and Korean Air played key roles in validating the system’s integration, working with airport authorities to align operational processes and data-sharing protocols ahead of its launch.
Beyond passenger convenience, the IRBS model is expected to deliver operational gains by reducing baggage handling pressure at U.S. hubs, improving on-time performance, and lowering the incidence of mishandled luggage, particularly on tight connections. The programme also benefits travellers originating outside South Korea who transit through Incheon en route to IRBS-enabled U.S. destinations.
Officials say further expansion is planned, with Seattle and Los Angeles next in line as part of a broader effort to build a more seamless, technology-driven global travel experience.
