Nigeria and Egypt are seeking to deepen bilateral aviation cooperation, improve air connectivity and expand opportunities for airlines and other industry stakeholders following talks between Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, and Egypt’s Minister of Civil Aviation, Dr. Sameh El-Hefny.
The meeting was held on the sidelines of the ongoing El-Alamein International Airshow (EIAS 2026) in Egypt, with discussions covering stronger air links between both countries, cooperation between their civil aviation authorities, technical capacity development and opportunities for airlines, airports, regulators and other aviation stakeholders.
Keyamo also used the engagement to press for improved EgyptAir fleet deployment on Nigerian routes, urging the airline to replace ageing aircraft operating in the Nigerian market with newer-generation equipment.
He said fleet modernisation was important to improving passenger experience, operational efficiency and the airline’s competitiveness, particularly as demand for international air travel continues to grow.
According to a statement by the minister’s Special Adviser on Media and Communications, Tunde Moshood, Keyamo stressed the strategic importance of Nigeria-Egypt aviation relations and reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to building international partnerships that can strengthen connectivity, stimulate tourism and trade, support airline growth and deliver greater value to passengers.
The Nigerian delegation also expressed readiness to work with Egypt’s Ministry of Civil Aviation to identify areas of mutually beneficial cooperation, particularly under the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM), which seeks to promote seamless air connectivity across Africa.
Capacity development formed another part of the discussions, with both sides exploring opportunities for technical and professional cooperation. Such collaboration could facilitate knowledge exchange and strengthen the capabilities of aviation professionals and institutions in both countries.
El-Hefny welcomed the engagement and reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to closer aviation cooperation with Nigeria, noting the importance of stronger collaboration in advancing air transport development and deepening links between the two countries’ aviation industries.
The Egyptian minister also proposed greater institutional cooperation between the African Civil Aviation Commission (AFCAC) and the League of Arab Civil Aviation (LACA). He said closer ties between the two regional bodies could encourage stronger partnerships and facilitate greater cooperation between African and Arab states.
The bilateral discussions come as Nigeria continues to pursue stronger international aviation partnerships and improvements in the quality of services available to travellers. Beyond flight connectivity, the focus on fleet modernisation highlights the importance of aircraft quality, operational reliability and passenger experience in strengthening international air services.
Both ministers reaffirmed their commitment to sustained dialogue and institutional cooperation, with the discussions positioning air connectivity, fleet renewal, technical capacity and regional integration as key areas for further Nigeria-Egypt aviation collaboration.
