The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria has recorded a significant security breakthrough following the arrest of fourteen suspected vandals at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, reinforcing efforts to safeguard critical aviation infrastructure.

The suspects were apprehended at about 7:00 p.m. on April 20, 2026, after a swift, intelligence-led operation carried out by FAAN’s security personnel in close collaboration with the Joint Military Task Force and other security agencies operating within the airport environment. The coordinated response followed surveillance and monitoring activities that identified suspicious movements around the Terminal One construction site.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the individuals had unlawfully gained access to the restricted construction area by impersonating authorised construction workers, an attempt that was quickly detected and thwarted through the vigilance and rapid intervention of security operatives. The suspects were intercepted while in possession of vandalised materials, including copper wires and iron components that had been illegally removed from the site.

All fourteen individuals were immediately taken into custody, and both the suspects and recovered items were handed over to the appropriate investigative authorities for further examination and prosecution. The incident highlights the increasing sophistication of attempts to target infrastructure projects, as well as the effectiveness of proactive security measures in place.

FAAN noted that the successful operation underscores the strength of its security framework and the high level of coordination among agencies tasked with protecting the airport. The Authority reiterated its zero-tolerance stance toward criminal activities, particularly those aimed at undermining ongoing development projects and compromising national aviation assets.

Reaffirming its commitment to safety and operational integrity, FAAN stated that it will continue to enhance surveillance systems, tighten access control measures, and deepen inter-agency collaboration to prevent similar incidents. The Authority also urged members of the public to remain alert and report any suspicious activity within and around airport environments, as part of broader efforts to maintain a secure and resilient aviation sector.
