Nigerian travellers heading to the United States could have more options for reaching California and other West Coast destinations as Delta Air Lines prepares to increase its operations at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) to more than 200 daily departures during the peak of its summer 2027 schedule.
The planned expansion will complement Delta’s existing nonstop Lagos-Atlanta service, giving passengers travelling from Nigeria another gateway into the airline’s extensive US network.
While the Lagos-Atlanta route provides connections through Delta’s Atlanta hub, the expanded LAX operation will offer access to destinations across California and the wider US West Coast. Travellers can also use Los Angeles as a connecting point for destinations across the Pacific and parts of Asia.
Delta currently serves 25 international destinations from LAX, including cities in Asia and the South Pacific. The airline said its planned summer schedule would represent its largest and most premium operation at the airport.
For Nigerian passengers, the development could be particularly relevant for journeys to Los Angeles and other West Coast destinations, potentially reducing the need to rely solely on connections through the eastern and central United States.
Delta’s investment in Los Angeles also extends beyond flight operations. The airline has invested $2.3 billion in its Sky Way project at LAX, which links Terminals 2 and 3 and is intended to make movement through the airport easier while improving passenger facilities.
Premium passengers will have access to dedicated Delta One check-in facilities, private Transportation Security Administration screening and Delta One Lounges. The airline also plans to open another Delta Sky Club at LAX in 2027.
The carrier is further enhancing its premium onboard offering with an expanded wine programme featuring selections from California and international wineries. Eligible passengers will also have access to fast, free Wi-Fi and Delta Sync entertainment on flights.
Courtney Moore, Chief Revenue and Experience Officer at Los Angeles World Airports, said continued airline investment and network expansion would strengthen LAX’s role as an international gateway.
For travellers from Nigeria, Delta’s growing presence at LAX adds another dimension to the airline’s US network, combining increased access to the West Coast with onward connections to destinations across the Pacific.
The airline expects more than 200 daily departures at LAX during the summer peak, making the airport a larger component of its wider US and international operations.
