The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) is set to transform domestic air travel with the introduction of V-Pass, a biometric facial recognition system designed to deliver faster, safer and more seamless passenger processing across the country’s airports.
Developed in partnership with Verxid Technologies Limited, the technology-driven identity verification platform will enable passengers to authenticate their identities through facial recognition, significantly reducing reliance on physical identification documents while enhancing aviation security and passenger convenience.
The deployment strategy was reviewed during a high-level meeting between FAAN and Verxid Technologies, where both parties discussed implementation timelines, security protocols and operational procedures aimed at improving the overall passenger experience.
Speaking on the initiative, FAAN’s Director of Commercial and Business Development, Ms. Adebola, said the introduction of V-Pass underscores the Authority’s commitment to leveraging digital innovation to strengthen passenger facilitation and aviation security across Nigeria’s domestic airports.
Under the new system, Nigerian passengers will complete a one-time registration using their National Identification Number (NIN) alongside facial biometric capture, while foreign travellers will enrol with their international passports through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) and biometric authentication.
Once enrolled, passengers will undergo biometric verification before accessing restricted airport areas and again prior to boarding, creating a dual-layer authentication process designed to prevent identity fraud, impersonation and unauthorized access while strengthening security oversight.
To further improve efficiency, passengers will be able to complete verification through self-service kiosks or receive assistance from FAAN personnel, while automated e-Gates will facilitate access to controlled areas, reduce queues and improve passenger flow. According to the developers, first-time enrolment will take approximately one minute, while subsequent biometric verification will be completed in less than 30 seconds.
The platform will also provide airlines with secure access to flight schedules, passenger manifests and boarding statistics through an integrated digital interface. For FAAN, a Central Management System will enable real-time monitoring of passenger movements, generate operational analytics and support future integration with other airport management systems.
FAAN and Verxid emphasized that data privacy remains a core component of the project. The platform is fully compliant with the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation (NDPR), and passenger information will not be stored on kiosks or handheld devices used during the verification process.
Ahead of the nationwide rollout, both organisations will embark on an extensive public awareness campaign across television, radio, social media, airport public address systems and airline communication channels to educate travellers on the benefits and operation of the V-Pass system. A live proof-of-concept demonstration and technical site assessments will also be conducted before full implementation.
FAAN said the introduction of V-Pass forms part of its broader digital transformation agenda aimed at modernising airport operations, enhancing security and delivering a smarter, more efficient and passenger-centric travel experience across Nigeria’s domestic aviation sector.
