Nigeria has completed its integration into the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) Public Key Directory (PKD), a major milestone expected to strengthen the security of the country’s electronic passports, eliminate verification challenges at international borders and enable faster, more reliable immigration clearance for Nigerian travellers worldwide.
The achievement follows the successful upload of all of Nigeria’s Country Signing Certificate Authorities (CSCAs) into the ICAO Public Key Directory by the Federal Government through the Ministry of Interior and the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS). The completion ceremony was held at ICAO headquarters in Montreal, Canada, and was led by the Comptroller-General of Immigration, Kemi Nandap.
According to a statement issued by the Service Public Relations Officer, DCI AS Akinlabi, the exercise was undertaken to address passive authentication challenges previously experienced by some Nigerian passport holders at selected foreign border control points.
With the integration now complete, border authorities in all ICAO PKD member states can instantly verify the authenticity and integrity of Nigerian electronic passports through automated systems. The development establishes a secure digital chain of trust that enables immigration authorities worldwide to confirm that Nigerian travel documents are genuine and have not been altered.
The Nigeria Immigration Service said the milestone represents another significant step in its drive to strengthen digital identity management, improve border security cooperation and align Nigeria’s passport infrastructure with international aviation security standards.
The Service added that the integration reinforces its commitment to enhancing the credibility of Nigerian travel documents, promoting global interoperability and ensuring smoother border clearance for holders of Nigerian passports.
The ICAO Public Key Directory serves as the global repository through which participating countries exchange the digital certificates used to authenticate electronic passports and other machine-readable travel documents. By becoming fully integrated into the system, Nigeria joins a trusted international network that allows immigration systems across participating countries to securely validate its e-passports in real time.
The development is expected to reduce delays during immigration processing, improve the efficiency of security checks and further strengthen international confidence in the Nigerian passport, making cross-border travel more seamless for Nigerian citizens.
