Ethiopian Airlines has expanded its presence in Mozambique with the launch of a new three-times-weekly passenger service to Nacala, adding the coastal city as its third destination in the country after Maputo and Beira.
The inaugural flight departed from Addis Ababa Bole International Airport following a ceremony attended by government officials, aviation stakeholders and executives of the airline.
The new route provides travellers with direct access to Nacala, a coastal destination in northern Mozambique known for its tourism attractions and growing economic potential. It is also expected to improve the region’s connections with international markets through Ethiopian Airlines’ hub in Addis Ababa.
Commenting on the launch, Ethiopian Airlines Group Chief Executive Officer, Mesfin Tasew, said the new service reflected the airline’s commitment to strengthening connectivity across Africa and linking more destinations on the continent to the rest of the world.
He described Nacala as an important tourism destination for Mozambique, noting that its addition to the airline’s network would further deepen connectivity between the two countries and support wider socio-economic development.
Ethiopian Airlines currently serves more than 65 destinations across Africa, using Addis Ababa as its strategic hub to connect passengers to cities across the continent and beyond.
The addition of Nacala is expected to provide greater travel options for tourists, business travellers and international investors seeking access to northern Mozambique. Improved air links could also support trade, investment and commercial exchanges, while strengthening the region’s connections with development partners and other international markets.
For Mozambique, the service offers an opportunity to improve access to a region with tourism and economic potential, while giving international visitors and businesses an additional gateway into the country.
The launch forms part of Ethiopian Airlines’ broader African network expansion strategy, through which the carrier continues to strengthen regional connectivity and support tourism, trade and economic integration across the continent.
