The Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu has reached a major regulatory milestone following the issuance of an Aerodrome Certificate by the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) to the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), confirming the airport’s full compliance with national and international safety and operational standards.
The certification, presented at the NCAA headquarters in Abuja, signifies that the airport meets the stringent requirements outlined under global aviation regulations, including the International Civil Aviation Organization’s standards for aerodrome design, operations, and safety management. It also marks a significant step in strengthening Nigeria’s aviation oversight framework ahead of upcoming international audits.
Director-General of Civil Aviation, Chris Najomo, represented by the Director of Aerodrome and Airspace Standards, Ahmad Abba, described the development as a landmark achievement that reflects the country’s commitment to global best practices. He noted that the certification followed a rigorous five-phase evaluation process covering critical areas such as infrastructure, safety systems, emergency preparedness, and personnel training.
Najomo commended FAAN for its cooperation and dedication throughout the process, emphasising that such collaboration between regulator and operator is essential to maintaining consistent safety standards across the country’s airports.
For FAAN, the certification represents both recognition and responsibility. Managing Director Olubunmi Kuku, represented by Adebola Agunbiade, described it as a collective achievement made possible through the contributions of technical teams and industry stakeholders. She reaffirmed the authority’s commitment to sustaining compliance and continuously improving operational standards across its airport network.
The certification is also expected to enhance the airport’s credibility among international airlines and aviation bodies, positioning it to attract increased traffic and new routes. Enugu State officials welcomed the development as a boost to broader economic ambitions, with plans to strengthen the airport’s role as a regional aviation hub.
Recent infrastructure upgrades, including improved security systems, firefighting capabilities, and airside facilities, have supported the airport’s readiness for certification and future expansion. With regulatory approval now secured, the airport is poised to scale up operations, including the potential to handle more international flights and larger aircraft, reinforcing its role in Nigeria’s growing aviation landscape.
