Passengers travelling from Lagos to the United States have been left facing significant disruption after Delta Air Lines cancelled the same Lagos–Atlanta service twice within three days, citing a technical fault and later crew availability constraints.
The affected service, flight DL9895 from Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos to Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport, was initially scheduled to depart on Sunday, August 23, 2026.
The first cancellation was attributed to a mechanical issue identified during pre-departure safety checks. Passengers were informed that the service would be rescheduled once the aircraft had been cleared by maintenance.
However, when the rescheduled flight was due to operate on Tuesday, August 25, the airline cancelled it again. In a notification to affected passengers, Delta said the second cancellation resulted from an issue that limited crew availability.
“We are sorry. Your flight DL9895 from Lagos (LOS) – Atlanta (ATL) was cancelled due to an issue that limited crew availability,” the airline said in its notification.
The back-to-back cancellations have disrupted the travel plans of passengers who had arranged onward connections from Atlanta to destinations across the United States. Some travellers have reportedly had to make alternative arrangements for accommodation, domestic connections and ground transportation, with concerns over non-refundable bookings and other additional expenses.
The disruption has also affected passengers travelling for time-sensitive commitments, including university resumption, medical appointments and business engagements. Atlanta is a major connecting hub for passengers travelling onward to several destinations across the United States, meaning a cancellation of the Lagos service can have consequences beyond the initial flight.
The development has also raised concerns among affected passengers over the assistance and alternative travel arrangements being provided following the cancellations. Passengers have been seeking clarity on confirmed seats on alternative departures from Lagos as they await further communication from the airline.
Under applicable passenger-protection rules, affected travellers may have rights relating to rerouting, refunds and, depending on the circumstances and applicable regulations, accommodation, meals and other assistance when cancellations result in an overnight disruption.
