China emerged as the leading international destination for Nigerian travellers flying on Emirates in 2025, highlighting the strong commercial ties between both countries and reinforcing Nigeria’s growing importance within the airline’s African network.
Passenger data released by Emirates shows that more than 44,000 travellers flew from Nigeria on the airline between May 1 and August 31, 2025, reflecting rising demand for international travel and increased connectivity to destinations across Asia, Europe, North America and the Middle East.
China recorded the highest passenger volume, attracting 11,530 Nigerian travellers. Guangzhou accounted for nearly 80 per cent of all traffic to mainland China, underlining its continued importance as a major trading hub for Nigerian importers, entrepreneurs and business travellers. Other Chinese cities, including Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen, also recorded significant passenger traffic, reflecting expanding commercial and business links.
Dubai remained one of the airline’s busiest destinations for Nigerian travellers, with more than 6,370 passengers flying to the emirate for business, leisure, shopping and family visits. Emirates said Dubai continues to serve not only as a popular destination but also as a strategic gateway connecting Nigerians to hundreds of cities across its global network.
The United Kingdom also maintained strong demand, with more than 5,850 passengers travelling from Nigeria during the period. London Heathrow handled over 2,500 travellers, representing more than 43 per cent of all UK-bound passengers, while Manchester continued to attract substantial traffic from both business travellers and the Nigerian diaspora.
The United States remained a preferred long-haul market, with about 2,500 passengers connecting through Emirates’ network to its 11 American gateways. New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport emerged as the busiest U.S. destination, accounting for nearly one-third of all Nigeria-U.S. traffic, while Houston, Los Angeles, Washington D.C., Chicago and Boston also featured prominently.
Beyond these major markets, Nigerians travelled extensively to destinations including Delhi, Mumbai, Medina, Sydney, Christchurch, Mauritius, Seychelles and several European cities, illustrating the diverse purposes of travel ranging from business and education to tourism, religious pilgrimage and family reunions.
The airline’s data also highlighted changing travel patterns among Nigerians, with solo travel emerging as the dominant trend. More than 61 per cent of passengers travelled alone during the period, while families accounted for 17 per cent and couples represented 12 per cent, suggesting growing confidence among Nigerians to travel independently.
Emirates said it continues to enhance the passenger experience through its extensive global route network, regionally inspired cuisine, award-winning cabin service and its ice inflight entertainment platform, which offers more than 6,500 channels of content.
Passengers transiting through Dubai also have access to the airline’s Premium Economy cabin on selected Airbus A380, Airbus A350 and Boeing 777 aircraft serving destinations including China, the United Kingdom and the United States. The cabin features wider leather seats with greater recline, upgraded dining and enhanced onboard comfort. For premium travellers, Emirates’ First Class Private Suites on selected A380 aircraft offer private cabins, fine dining, an onboard lounge and the airline’s signature Shower Spa.
