The Nigerian Aviation Handling Company Plc (NAHCO Aviance) has received approval from the Federal Government to handle shipments containing radioactive materials at its airport facilities. This marks a first in the Nigerian aviation industry.

The approval was jointly issued by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and the Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA) following a meeting in Abuja on February 25. The communique, signed by Jamil Salau, Assistant General Manager (Legal) at NNRA, on behalf of the Director-General, Dr. Yau Usman Idris, stated that importers and exporters previously affected by restrictions should now contact NAHCO for their shipments.

The meeting was convened to discuss the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between NCAA and NNRA on September 1, 2023. Key resolutions from the meeting included the adoption of NNRA’s implementation plan as a working document, the formation of a technical working group within 14 days to oversee the MoU’s execution, and the development of a joint action plan with timelines for key activities. Other resolutions included the commencement of joint training programs, emergency preparedness drills, regular progress reviews, the harmonization of licensing validity, and streamlined processes for information sharing.

Commenting on the development, NAHCO’s Group Executive Director, Commercial and Business Development, Prince Saheed Lasisi, described the approval as a breakthrough for importers and exporters who had faced difficulties moving radioactive shipments. He emphasized that NAHCO is now equipped to assist international airlines and oil and gas companies (IOCs) in transporting such materials.

Group Managing Director/CEO of NAHCO, Olumuyiwa Olumekun, expressed gratitude to NCAA and NNRA for their trust in NAHCO’s capabilities. He assured that the company has implemented stringent compliance measures, with highly trained professionals ensuring adherence to safety and regulatory procedures.

With this approval, NAHCO solidifies its position as a key player in Nigeria’s logistics and aviation sectors, reinforcing its commitment to operational excellence and regulatory compliance.
