Passengers and airport users should prepare for temporary disruptions at Port Harcourt International Airport (PHIA) as Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, initiates a major infrastructure upgrade to enhance operational efficiency and improve the passenger experience. The project, which is part of the state’s broader plan to modernize key infrastructure, is expected to improve road networks within and around the airport, reduce traffic congestion, and enhance overall accessibility.
One of the key aspects of the upgrade is the expansion of access roads leading to the airport, which will ease congestion and ensure smoother vehicular movement for travelers and airport users. The internal roads in front of the domestic terminal, which are currently in poor condition, are also undergoing extensive rehabilitation to enhance traffic flow and improve passenger safety. The toll gate area is being remodeled, with major milling work underway to facilitate smoother entry and exit of vehicles, thereby reducing bottlenecks and improving airport accessibility.
In addition, a dedicated drop-off zone is being constructed to streamline passenger drop-offs, making it more convenient for travelers arriving at the domestic terminal. The road directly in front of the terminal building is being upgraded to improve both functionality and aesthetics, ensuring a more modern and organized airport environment. The remodeling of the day and overnight car parks is also nearing completion, providing more structured and secure parking facilities for airport users.
While these infrastructure improvements are expected to temporarily disrupt vehicular movement within and around the airport, the Rivers State Government has assured travelers that the project will be completed within a short time to minimize inconvenience. The upgrade aligns with efforts to modernize PHIA in line with international aviation standards, positioning Port Harcourt as a key travel hub in the South-South region.
Beyond enhancing passenger convenience, the airport upgrade is also expected to contribute to the economic growth of Rivers State and Nigeria. A well-structured and efficient airport will facilitate increased air traffic, attract more investors, and boost tourism and business activities in the region. Travelers and stakeholders can look forward to a more modern, efficient, and safer airport in the coming months as the project progresses toward completion.
