Bayelsa State has officially entered Nigeria’s commercial aviation space following the commencement of flight operations by Pioneer Airlines using one of the aircraft acquired by the state government.

The airline began operations with an ATR 72-600 aircraft operated under a partnership arrangement with the privately managed carrier, marking a significant milestone in the state’s aviation and economic development ambitions.

The maiden flight departed the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, on Monday at about 11:00 a.m. and became airborne at 11:10 a.m. en route to Bayelsa International Airport.

The flight was operated by Captain M. Ibrahim alongside First Officer Joyce, one of the airline’s female co-pilots, reflecting the carrier’s growing operational capacity and inclusiveness within its cockpit crew.

Among passengers onboard the inaugural flight was Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, who occupied seat 1A. He was accompanied by former House of Representatives member, Hon. Gabriel Onyenwife, the Governor’s Special Adviser on Political Matters I, High Chief Collins Cocodia, and several government aides.

After approximately one hour and five minutes in the air, the aircraft landed safely at Bayelsa International Airport at about 12:15 p.m.

Speaking shortly after arrival, Governor Diri expressed confidence in Pioneer Airlines’ ability to deliver safe and efficient services while describing the partnership as a strategic move to support economic growth and expand the state’s internally generated revenue base.

The governor also stated that the launch of flight operations represents another step towards strengthening connectivity, promoting investment opportunities, and positioning Bayelsa as an emerging participant in Nigeria’s aviation industry.

The commencement of operations follows the recent issuance of an Air Operator Certificate (AOC) to Pioneer Airlines by the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority, clearing the airline for non-scheduled commercial flight services after completing the country’s regulatory certification process.
