In a historic moment for African aviation, Ethiopian Airlines’ Airbus A350-1000 landed at Lagos’ Murtala Muhammed International Airport, marking the continent’s debut of the state-of-the-art aircraft. The arrival drew a large crowd of aviation stakeholders, government officials, and travel industry professionals, all gathered to witness the milestone.

The aircraft, captained by Sisay Kebede, touched down at noon from Addis Ababa, carrying 272 passengers, including 15 in Business Class and 257 in Economy. Wondwossen Beyene, General Manager of Ethiopian Airlines Nigeria, praised the aircraft’s revolutionary design, highlighting its advanced aerodynamics, fuel-efficient Rolls-Royce Trent XWB engines, and carbon-fiber fuselage, which together deliver a quieter, smoother journey for long-haul travel.

“This A350-1000 is a game-changer in aviation, setting new standards in comfort, efficiency, and technology,” said Beyene. “With features like Thales’ AVANT Up in-flight entertainment system, high-speed internet, large screens, and direct aisle access for all Business Class seats, the aircraft offers an unmatched travel experience.”

In addition to enhanced passenger comfort, the A350-1000 boasts increased cargo capacity, enabling efficient trade routes between Africa and the world. Ethiopian Airlines expects the arrival of three more A350-1000s in the coming months, expanding its fleet and reinforcing its commitment to the Nigerian market.

Beyene credited the milestone to Ethiopian Airlines’ dedicated team and the support of Nigeria’s Federal Government, Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, and Lagos State Government. Several passengers expressed excitement over the experience, with one calling the aircraft “modern and comfortable,” thanks to its spacious design and cutting-edge amenities.

The A350-1000’s advanced Airspace cabin is known for its exceptional quietness, reducing noise by 50% compared to previous generations. This aircraft is one of the most fuel-efficient widebody options available, combining new generation engines with lightweight materials for reduced environmental impact and elevated passenger experience.
