Skyway Aviation Handling Company (SAHCO) Plc has introduced the EVAC+CHAIR emergency evacuation system, becoming the first aviation ground handling company in Nigeria to deploy the specialised mobility equipment designed to improve assistance for passengers with reduced mobility.
The initiative forms part of the company’s broader strategy to strengthen safety, accessibility and operational efficiency by providing dignified support for passengers who require assistance during boarding, disembarkation and emergency evacuations.
According to a statement issued by the company’s Head of Corporate Communications, Mrs. Adetola Vanessa Uansohia, the deployment reinforces SAHCO’s commitment to innovation, inclusive service delivery and compliance with international ground handling standards.
Widely recognised as one of the world’s leading stairway evacuation chairs since its introduction in 1982, the EVAC+CHAIR is designed to transport passengers safely on stairways using a gravity- and friction-controlled system that minimises the need for heavy lifting. The equipment is fitted with secure harnesses, durable rubber tracks and an ergonomic design that enables trained personnel to move passengers safely while reducing physical strain on operators.
Speaking on behalf of SAHCO Chairman, Dr. Taiwo Afolabi, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Mrs. Adenike Aboderin, said the investment reflects the company’s determination to make air travel safer and more accessible for all passengers.
She noted that the deployment demonstrates SAHCO’s commitment to ensuring passengers with reduced mobility receive professional, dignified and seamless assistance, while also improving operational efficiency and the overall travel experience.
Aboderin added that the acquisition further strengthens SAHCO’s position as a preferred ground handling partner for airlines operating in Nigeria, stressing that the company will continue investing in modern equipment and innovative technologies that support safety, efficiency and customer satisfaction.
She also recalled that SAHCO became the first aviation ground handling company in Nigeria to acquire the Rapiscan Itemiser 5X explosive trace detection system in 2025, further underscoring its focus on adopting globally recognised technologies to enhance aviation safety and security.
The company said its sustained investments in advanced ground support equipment, technology, staff development and internationally recognised safety standards are aimed at improving passenger experience, reducing aircraft turnaround time and delivering consistent, high-quality ground handling services across all commercially operated airports in Nigeria.
