United Nigeria Airlines has temporarily withdrawn two Airbus A320 aircraft from service following a second bird strike incident in less than 24 hours, marking the fourth such occurrence involving the airline since January 2026.
The latest incident occurred on Sunday, February 15, 2026, during the take-off of Flight UN0519 from Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport en route to Murtala Muhammed International Airport. According to a statement signed by the airline’s Public Relations Office, the bird strike affected one of the aircraft’s engines shortly after departure.
The airline said the aircraft was immediately withdrawn from service in line with its established safety protocols. It stressed that passenger safety remains its top operational priority and that the aircraft will undergo comprehensive technical inspections before being cleared to return to service.
The development brings the total number of Airbus aircraft grounded within a 24-hour period to two, following an earlier bird strike involving Flight UN0523 from Asaba to Lagos on Saturday. Earlier in the week, on February 12, another bird strike was reported in Port Harcourt involving Flight UN0514/614 shortly after landing from Lagos. Although no visible damage was detected in that instance, the aircraft was subjected to precautionary checks to confirm its airworthiness.
Describing the latest incident as “another bird strike too many,” the airline acknowledged that the temporary withdrawal of the two aircraft would disrupt operations across its domestic network. Some flights may be delayed or rescheduled as the carrier manages fleet availability.
Bird strikes, which occur when birds collide with aircraft engines or fuselage, are a known aviation hazard, particularly during take-off and landing when aircraft operate at lower altitudes. While such incidents are not uncommon globally, multiple occurrences within a short period can create operational and financial strain for airlines.
United Nigeria Airlines apologised to passengers for the inconvenience caused and appealed for understanding as it works to minimise disruptions. The carrier advised affected travellers to contact its official communication channels for rebooking and support, reiterating that safety will not be compromised under any circumstances.
