Marriott International has announced bold expansion plans across Africa, with Nigeria emerging as its largest growth market in West Africa. By the end of 2027, the hospitality giant expects to open six new properties in Nigeria, reinforcing its commitment to meet the growing demand for high-quality hospitality experiences in the region.
The expansion includes the anticipated debut of Courtyard by Marriott in Abuja within the next two years, alongside continued investments in the Protea Hotels by Marriott and Marriott Hotels brands. This move aligns with the country’s increasing appetite for premium and select-service accommodations in key urban and business hubs.
In addition to Nigeria, Marriott is set to enter three new West African markets by 2027. This year will see the debut of Four Points by Sheraton Sao Vicente Resort in Cape Verde, while Côte d’Ivoire will welcome an Autograph Collection Hotel in Assinie-Mafia in 2027. Mauritania will also join Marriott’s portfolio with a Sheraton Hotel in Nouakchott, expected to open later this year.
East Africa remains a key growth region for Marriott, with Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda leading the charge. Following the successful launch of JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge in 2023, Marriott plans to open six safari properties in the region by 2027. These include:
- – The Ritz-Carlton, Masai Mara Safari Camp in Kenya
- – Mapito Safari Camp, Serengeti – Autograph Collection in Tanzania
Tanzania’s Marriott portfolio is expected to more than double by the end of 2027, while Kenya will see five new openings, including the Courtyard by Marriott debut in Nairobi. In Uganda, Marriott will open the country’s first Marriott Hotel and Marriott Executive Apartments in Kampala by the end of 2025.
In North Africa, Egypt and Morocco are driving Marriott’s expansion. Egypt is slated to welcome the Aloft Ghazala Bay—marking the debut of the Aloft Hotels brand on the continent. More than 50% of Marriott’s expected additions in Egypt will be conversion or adaptive reuse projects. Morocco is set to see the introduction of AC Hotels by Marriott with a flagship property in Casablanca by 2027.
South Africa, Marriott’s largest African market, will expand its Autograph Collection Hotels portfolio with Morea House in Cape Town (2025) and a property in Kruger National Park (2026).
Elsewhere in Southern and Central Africa, Democratic Republic of Congo will welcome Protea Hotel by Marriott and Four Points by Sheraton in Kinshasa this year. Madagascar will host a Delta Hotels by Marriott in 2025, and a Protea Hotel by Marriott in Antananarivo in 2026. Cameroon will see the debut of Le Méridien in 2027.
