The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has issued a stern warning to international airlines regarding the growing number of Nigerian passengers who are transported partway to their destinations, only to be denied entry and deported back to Nigeria due to visa or travel restrictions.
In a statement signed by Michael Achimugu, NCAA’s Director of Consumer Protection and Public Affairs, the authority condemned this practice, emphasizing that it has caused significant distress to passengers and tarnished the reputation of Nigeria’s aviation sector.
“These actions, which involve refusal of boarding or denial of entry at intermediate or transit stops due to visa and travel restrictions, are completely unacceptable,” the statement read.
The NCAA stressed that airlines have a duty to inform passengers about any potential obstacles to their admissibility before their journey begins. Passengers should not be placed in situations where they are unexpectedly denied entry or forcibly returned to Nigeria at transit points.
According to the Nigeria Civil Aviation Regulations 2023 (Part 19.21.1.1), airlines and their agents must screen passengers and provide accurate, up-to-date information on travel document requirements. They are also required to ensure travelers are fully informed of any visa or entry restrictions before issuing tickets or allowing boarding.
In response to these concerns, the NCAA has announced immediate enforcement measures to curb such violations. Effective immediately, any airline found guilty of these practices will face regulatory actions, which may include hefty fines, suspension of flight operations, or other penalties deemed appropriate.
“The NCAA expects full compliance from all international airlines operating in Nigeria. Airlines must uphold professionalism, ensure the well-being of Nigerian travelers, and maintain the integrity of the aviation industry,” Achimugu stated.
The NCAA reassured Nigerian passengers that it remains committed to enforcing aviation regulations, ensuring that travelers are treated fairly, and holding airlines accountable for irresponsible and negligent practices. With these strict new measures, the NCAA aims to prevent further incidents of boarding denial, mid-journey deportations, and undue distress for Nigerian travelers, while reinforcing Nigeria’s aviation industry as a global standard for safety and compliance.
