General Muhammadu Buhari International Airport in Maiduguri is set to begin full international operations on January 1, 2025. This milestone marks a significant upgrade aimed at enhancing connectivity for the North East Zone and positioning Maiduguri as a key player in global air travel and cargo transportation.

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, visited the airport alongside Chief Executives of major aviation agencies, including FAAN’s Olubunmi Kuku, NAMA’s Farouk Umar, and NCAA’s Chris Najomo. Other critical stakeholders such as Customs, DSS, Immigration, and NDLEA were also present. The delegation was warmly received by Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum.

Governor Zulum commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for appointing Keyamo and praised the Minister’s leadership, which has significantly advanced the aviation sector. He also reaffirmed Borno State’s commitment to collaborating with the Federal Government to ensure a successful launch.

Keyamo emphasized the project’s importance as a symbol of growth and resilience for the region. The airport, with its modern runway and facilities, will become the first fully operational international airport in the North East and a regional cargo hub, boosting economic activity in the zone and beyond.

The visit provided an opportunity to address logistical considerations and ensure a seamless transition to international operations. It also underscored the Federal Government’s dedication to enhancing Nigeria’s aviation infrastructure, with a focus on regional development and national cohesion.

This upgrade sets the stage for prosperity and progress in the North East as the airport prepares to unlock new opportunities for international travel and trade.
