The International Air Transport Association (IATA) and the FIATA International Federation of Freight Forwarders Associations have announced FIATA’s endorsement of the IATA Cargo Handling Manual (ICHM). This endorsement follows a year-long process of discussions, reviews, and collaboration between the two organizations.

The ICHM establishes standardized procedures for airlines, ground handling agents (GHAs), and freight forwarders, ensuring consistency and efficiency across the cargo handling process. By adopting these standards, all parties involved can streamline operations, drawing on their individual strengths to boost efficiency throughout the supply chain.

“FIATA’s endorsement of the ICHM advances IATA’s objective of creating a safer and more efficient air cargo industry. Standardized procedures reduce risks, enhance performance, and increase efficiency. This brings significant benefits to the global supply chain and the millions of businesses and individuals who rely on it,” said Brendan Sullivan, IATA’s Global Head of Cargo.

Stéphane Graber, FIATA’s Director General, added, “FIATA has collaborated closely with IATA in reviewing the ICHM, offering input to ensure it meets the needs of freight forwarders worldwide, including small and medium-sized enterprises. These standardized procedures will accelerate and simplify processes, while enhancing services for shippers. Importantly, FIATA places a strong emphasis on safety and security, and this partnership ensures these priorities are integrated into all handling procedures. This collaboration strengthens mutual recognition among stakeholders, promoting operational efficiency, safety, and cost savings across the supply chain.”

FIATA’s endorsement of the ICHM unites key players in air cargo handling around a consistent global standard, marking a new era of cooperation between freight forwarders and airlines and reinforcing their shared commitment to operational excellence.
