The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has confirmed the recovery of a fifth body from the October 24, 2024 helicopter crash involving a Sikorsky SK76, registered as 5N BQG, operated by Eastwind Aviation. The tragic incident, which took place off the Bonny Finima coast in the Atlantic Ocean, involved eight individuals, including two crew members. Recovery operations are ongoing as investigators and specialized teams intensify efforts to locate the remaining bodies.

According to NSIB’s Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance, Bimbo Olawumi Oladeji, the fifth body was identified by the HD Steadfast vessel in the water, leading to a recovery operation using a Fast Rescue Craft (FRC). Due to the advanced state of decomposition, the body required specialized handling before its transfer to the FPSO deck and then to a morgue onshore.

Oladeji detailed the recovery process, noting that Eastwind Aviation contacted Caverton Aviation to provide air ambulance support. However, with no available aircraft, NSIB coordinated with the Nigerian Navy, who provided essential logistical support for body evacuation. Additionally, Eastwind Aviation provided crew photographs to aid identification efforts, which were sent to the Offshore Installation Manager (OIM) for verification.

Divers have encountered fragments of clean fiberglass and aluminum, presumed to be from the wreckage, guiding NSIB’s adjustments to the search grid. Calculations based on tidal flow, strength, and timing suggest that the helicopter likely entered the water approximately 1,850 meters west of the initial recovery area.

NSIB Director-General Capt. Alex Badeh Jr. commended the collaboration and commitment shown by all involved parties, especially the Nigerian Navy, in ensuring a thorough and respectful recovery process. “The environmental conditions have posed unique challenges, but we remain dedicated to completing this mission with professionalism,” Badeh stated. “Our primary objective is to uncover the circumstances surrounding this accident, and we extend our deepest sympathies to the families affected.”

As the NSIB continues its recovery and investigation efforts, they remain committed to uncovering essential information to understand the cause of this tragic accident.
