The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has revealed that two pilots of an Air Peace Boeing 737 tested positive for alcohol, while a cabin crew member tested positive for cannabis, following a runway excursion at Port Harcourt International Airport on 13 July 2025.

According to the preliminary accident report signed by NSIB spokesperson Mrs. Bimbo Olawumi Oladeji, the aircraft, operating a Lagos–Port Harcourt flight with 103 people on board, landed from an unstabilised approach and touched down 2,264 metres beyond the runway threshold. It eventually came to a halt 209 metres into the clearway.

All passengers and crew disembarked safely, and no injuries or structural damage were recorded. However, toxicological tests confirmed recent alcohol consumption by both the Captain and First Officer, with a cabin crew member also testing positive for tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the active component of cannabis.

The NSIB said the findings are under review as part of its human performance and safety management investigation. It has directed Air Peace to tighten crew fitness-for-duty checks and improve training in handling unstabilised approaches.

The final report is expected to present further conclusions and recommendations to strengthen aviation safety in Nigeria.
