The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has launched a centralised Secure Aviation Data Information Service (SADIS) API platform, marking a significant advancement in aviation weather technology and positioning Nigeria as a pioneer in Africa.
The platform, operated by the UK Met Office under the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), provides programmatic access to World Area Forecast System (WAFS) datasets and other critical meteorological information. It replaces the legacy SADIS FTP with a System-Wide Information Management (SWIM)-compliant platform, capable of delivering higher-resolution data in real-time.
With this upgrade, aviation stakeholders across Nigeria will now have secure, instant access to forecasts, charts, and observations, supporting safer, more reliable, and cost-effective flight operations.
Commending NiMet’s ICT team, Director-General and CEO, Prof. Charles Anosike, who also serves as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative at the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO), said, “This innovation demonstrates NiMet’s leadership in adopting modern technologies that enhance aviation safety and efficiency while ensuring compliance with ICAO and WMO standards. The SADIS platform is a critical step in modernising Nigeria’s aviation weather services.”
The SADIS API provides aviation datasets covering icing, turbulence, cumulonimbus, tropopause height, jet streams, volcanic ash, tropical cyclones, and operational meteorological reports such as METAR, TAF, and SPECI.
NiMet said the milestone future-proofs the nation’s aviation meteorological services, giving pilots, forecasters, and operators faster and more reliable access to critical weather data. With this deployment, Nigeria becomes one of the first African countries to integrate modern SADIS technologies into national aviation operations, strengthening both safety and competitiveness in the aviation sector.
