Nigeria has secured re-election into Part II of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Council, following a vote at the 42nd ICAO Assembly in Montreal, Canada.
The country’s candidate, Engineer Mahmoud Ben-Tukur, retained Nigeria’s seat after polling 163 votes out of 185 member states, defeating 11 other African contenders. His return strengthens Nigeria’s representation in global aviation governance and policy-making.
Part II of the ICAO Council is reserved for countries that make significant contributions to international civil aviation facilities. Nigeria’s strong performance reflects the confidence of the global aviation community in its leadership and ongoing contributions to the sector.
Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, led Nigeria’s delegation and coordinated the campaign in support of Ben-Tukur. He described the outcome as a proud achievement for both Nigeria and Africa, noting that the country’s continued presence on the council reaffirms its commitment to aviation safety, security, sustainability, and international cooperation.
Nigeria now joins 11 other countries, including Egypt and South Africa, in Part II of the Council, ensuring the nation remains at the forefront of shaping aviation standards and advancing Africa’s collective interests within ICAO.
