The Federal Government has initiated a major review of its airport development framework, with the approval of a new masterplan process led by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo. In partnership with Munich International and F.C.I International, a technical workshop has been conducted to lay the groundwork for the implementation of infrastructure improvements across Nigerian airports.
The workshop, held in Abuja, was aimed at creating a standardized approach to airport development in the country. Senior Consultant Bünck Olaf from Munich Airport International, who has overseen over 13 global airport masterplan projects, provided expert insights to guide the process.
Speaking at the event, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Emmanuel Meribole, representing the Minister, emphasized that the implementation of the masterplan would be mandatory for all Nigerian airports. He further stated that the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) would actively monitor adherence to the masterplan to ensure full compliance.
The Managing Director of F.C.I International, Mr. Fortune Idu, described the event as an “Airport Master Plan fact-finding technical workshop,” designed to support the Ministry’s technical team and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) in implementing the new masterplan.
This initiative is seen as crucial for aligning Nigeria’s airport infrastructure with global standards, promoting more efficient operations and enhanced safety. The workshop also served as a platform to prepare participants from various aviation agencies to become custodians of the masterplan once fully developed.
Acting Director-General of the CAA, Capt. Chris Najomo, emphasized the long-term commitment to aviation development, urging participants to fully engage in the process. Representatives from the Federal Ministry of Aviation, FAAN, aviation agencies, and state airports attended, highlighting the importance of a unified approach to Nigeria’s airport modernization efforts.
The review process aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s renewed hope agenda, aiming to create a sustainable and world-class aviation sector for Nigeria.
