The Federal Government has commenced the review of the Bilateral Air Service Agreement (BASA) with Jamaica, aiming to establish direct air connectivity between both nations and strengthen diplomatic ties.
Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, is leading the process from Nigeria’s side, while Jamaica’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Lincoln Downer, is spearheading efforts for his country.
During a meeting in Abuja, Downer expressed his appreciation for Nigeria and shared his belief that it might be his ancestral home. He emphasized the need for improved diplomatic relations and direct flights, citing the growing cultural exchange between Nigeria and Jamaica, including the rising popularity of Afrobeat and Nollywood films in Jamaica.
Downer highlighted Jamaica’s lack of a national carrier and reliance on Trinidad and Tobago for air transport. He proposed a collaborative BASA agreement involving both countries to bridge the air service gap and meet the increasing travel demand.
“There is no reason why we should not have a direct flight between our countries. Nigerians love Jamaica, and there is a rising demand for Jamaican spices in Nigeria,” he noted.
In response, Keyamo welcomed the proposals and assured swift action. He announced plans to establish a committee to expedite the process and expressed his willingness to travel to Jamaica if necessary to finalize the agreement.
