The Federal Government of Nigeria has finally paid the outstanding 45-month minimum wage arrears owed to the staff of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), resolving a long-standing issue that dates back to 2019. This payment has been a major relief for NiMet staff, who have faced financial challenges due to the prolonged delay.

The arrears had been a source of tension between NiMet management, its staff, and labor unions, with the situation escalating earlier this year. In May 2024, the unions, under the NiMet Unions Joint Action Committee (NJAC), threatened to embark on an industrial strike, scheduled to begin on Monday, May 20, 2024. However, a last-minute intervention by the House Committee on Aviation Technology, led by Rt. Hon. Abiodun Isiaq Akinlade, along with their Senate counterparts, led to the suspension of the strike. An agreement was reached on Sunday, May 19, 2024, during a special session convened with NiMet management and union representatives.

Professor Charles Anosike, the Director General and Chief Executive Officer of NiMet, expressed his gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for authorizing the payment. He praised the President for being “worker-friendly” and for clearing the arrears, despite them predating his administration. Professor Anosike also extended his thanks to the Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, SAN, and the Chairmen of the House and Senate Committees on Aviation, Rt. Hon. Abiodun Isiaq Akinlade and Senator Abdulfatai Buhari, respectively, for their pivotal roles in resolving the issue.

In a statement dated August 12, 2024, NJAC, represented by its Secretary, Comrade Okechukwu Nwokoro, expressed profound gratitude to all parties involved in securing the payment of the arrears. The unions acknowledged that this action has alleviated the financial burdens on NiMet staff and renewed their commitment to delivering high-quality meteorological services to the nation.

NJAC also praised Professor Anosike for his leadership and unwavering commitment to the welfare of NiMet staff, describing him as a leader who places high value on the morale and well-being of his team. The resolution of this issue has not only relieved the financial strain on NiMet employees but has also strengthened their resolve to continue serving the nation with excellence.

The unions concluded their statement by extending heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed to resolving the matter, noting that their efforts have made a significant difference in the lives of many. The resolution marks a new chapter for NiMet, with staff pledging to work with renewed hope, dedication, and enthusiasm.
