The Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has begun the rehabilitation of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport runway.
The rehabilitation work is coming 34 days after the facility was closed on August 24. FAAN had announced the closure of the facility, which is the only international airport in the south-east region, due to safety concerns over its operations.
Henrietta Yakubu, the Corporate Affairs Manager of FAAN made the disclosure on Sunday while talking to newsmen. She confirmed that work has finally begun at the airport ahead of the December 2019 deadline set for the completion of the runway repairs and other renovation works.
The closure of the airport has led to the diversion of international flights to the Port Harcourt International Airport. Similarly, domestic flights were diverted to Sam Mbakwe Airport, Owerri, Port Harcourt airport and Asaba airport in Delta.
