Kenya Airways has confirmed the death of a passenger who became unresponsive on board a flight from Nairobi to Lagos shortly before the aircraft landed at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA).
The incident occurred at about 9:20 p.m. on Tuesday, October 6, when the passenger was found unresponsive approximately 20 minutes before the aircraft was due to land in Lagos.
The airline said its cabin crew immediately administered first aid in line with their training and followed established emergency procedures.
The aircraft landed at MMIA at about 9:41 p.m., where medical personnel met the flight and attended to the passenger. The medical team subsequently confirmed the passenger’s death.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Kenya Airways said it was providing the necessary support while working with the deceased’s family, local authorities and aviation regulators.
“Kenya Airways is providing the necessary support in close coordination with the deceased’s family, local authorities and aviation regulators,” the airline said.
The carrier expressed its condolences to the family and friends of the deceased and said it would respect the privacy and dignity of those involved. It also apologised to other passengers for any inconvenience caused by the medical emergency.
The deceased was subsequently taken to an undisclosed morgue in Lagos, according to reports.
Additional reports have suggested that the passenger had become restless during the flight and may have been travelling back to Nigeria after an earlier journey involving Madagascar. However, these circumstances have not been confirmed by Kenya Airways or the relevant authorities and the cause of the passenger’s death remains undisclosed.
The incident occurred shortly before the aircraft’s arrival in Lagos, with the crew and airport medical personnel responding to the emergency before and after landing.
