The Federal Government, through the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, has announced plans to establish an aircraft manufacturing firm in Nigeria while inaugurating XeJet’s state-of-the-art Flight Support and Engineering Hub at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.
Speaking at the inauguration, Minister Festus Keyamo, SAN, emphasized the government’s commitment to transforming Nigeria into a regional aviation hub. “This project represents a significant step in making Nigeria a center of excellence in aviation services. It aligns with our vision to support local operators, foster innovation, and create an enabling environment for growth,” Keyamo stated.
The XeJet facility, a multi-million-dollar collaboration with Zenith Bank and Fidelity Bank, will serve as a Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) center and include a training institute. The project is expected to enhance Nigeria’s aviation ecosystem, attract users from across West Africa, and generate employment for thousands of Nigerians.
Emphasizing the broader vision, XeJet CEO Emmanuel Iza revealed plans to position Nigeria on the global map for aircraft manufacturing and aviation services. “Our aim is to contribute to aircraft manufacturing, even if it’s just components like wings or landing gears. Nigeria has the talent; we need the facilities and enabling policies to make it happen,” he said.
Keyamo also disclosed that the government is exploring the establishment of an aircraft manufacturing company at the same airport. “While details are under wraps, we will soon break ground on this ambitious venture. Our role is to create the right policies and business environment for private-sector-led growth in aviation,” he added.
The new XeJet facility, constructed by China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), will include a taxiway connecting it to the airport runway. The first phase, involving site preparation and structural development, is estimated to cost $10 million.
The inauguration, attended by aviation stakeholders, underscores a collaborative effort to advance Nigeria’s aviation sector. With these developments, Nigeria is poised to strengthen its position as a leader in connectivity, commerce, and tourism across Africa.
