Nigeria’s Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, and Port Harcourt International Airport have been honored by the Airports Council International (ACI) Africa for their outstanding commitment to airport emergency management and resilience. The recognition took place during the 33rd Annual General Assembly of ACI Africa, held in Johannesburg, South Africa.
The prestigious awards were presented by ACI Africa’s Secretary-General, Ali Tounsi, and President, Emmanuel Chaves, during the Gala Night. In a statement released by Tunde Moshood, Senior Special Assistant for Media and Communications to the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, the awards celebrate the hard work and dedication of all those involved in maintaining high standards in airport emergency preparedness.
The accolades spotlight the leadership of Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo, whose efforts have been crucial in steering the country’s aviation sector toward excellence in global standards of safety, crisis management, and operational resilience.
Speaking at the event, ACI Africa President Emmanuel Chaves praised the Nigerian airports for their exceptional commitment to ensuring passenger safety and operational durability. “In an industry where unforeseen events can happen at any moment, the importance of robust emergency management cannot be overstated. Nigeria’s Nnamdi Azikiwe and Port Harcourt airports have set a benchmark for others to follow,” Chaves noted.
Both airports serve as key hubs in Nigeria’s aviation network, playing pivotal roles in both domestic and international air travel. Their dedication to emergency preparedness and resilience has further cemented their significance in the African aviation landscape.
The awards not only recognize the achievements of the airports but also highlight the collaborative efforts of all stakeholders in Nigeria’s aviation sector, including the Ministry of Aviation and airport authorities. According to Moshood, “This recognition is a reflection of the collective hard work that has gone into ensuring Nigerian airports meet the highest global standards in safety and resilience.”
