ValueJet has launched its inaugural direct flight from Lagos to Banjul, The Gambia, marking a strategic move to strengthen economic and tourism ties between the two West African nations.
Speaking at the launch event held on May 15, 2025, at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, the airline’s Managing Director, Capt. Omololu Majekodunmi, described the move as a major milestone in ValueJet’s regional growth agenda.
He stated, “The launch of our Lagos to Banjul flight is another important step in our mission to improve regional connectivity and promote economic integration across West Africa. This route offers significant opportunities for trade, tourism, investment, and cultural exchange.”
ValueJet is currently the only West African airline offering direct flights to Banjul, operated by its CRJ-900 aircraft. The airline is also integrating the Lagos-Banjul route into its broader domestic network, giving travellers more options to connect across the region.
Captain Majekodunmi emphasized that the airline remains committed to maintaining the highest safety and regulatory standards, with fares starting as low as ₦500,000.
He also noted that Nigeria and The Gambia stand to benefit immensely from enhanced air links, citing Nigeria’s dynamic business landscape and The Gambia’s expanding tourism sector.
The airline’s entry into the Gambian market received warm reception from Gambian officials. Among dignitaries at the launch were the Gambian Ambassador to Nigeria, Mohamadou Musa Njie; Tracy Osakwe, Director of Tourism Promotions at the Gambia Tourism Board; and Liaison Officer Ansumana Ceesay.
Media personalities Isaac and Nneka Moses of Goge Africa also attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony, which marked the official commencement of the new route.
The Gambian government has expressed full support for ValueJet’s operations, acknowledging the airline’s role in advancing regional integration and economic development.
With this launch, ValueJet is reaffirming its commitment to connecting African cities and playing a pivotal role in shaping the future of intra-African travel.
