United Nigeria Airlines has recorded a major milestone in its growth trajectory after joining the International Air Transport Association Multilateral Interline Traffic Agreement, a move that significantly expands its reach beyond domestic operations and positions it within the global aviation network.
The admission, confirmed under IATA Memorandum ADMIN/INTERLINE/4811, follows the airline’s successful compliance with Passenger Services Conference Resolution 780, one of the key requirements for participation in international interline frameworks. With this development, the carrier is now integrated into a network of hundreds of global airlines, enabling it to establish interline and potential codeshare partnerships.
The milestone allows passengers to book seamless journeys across multiple airlines on a single ticket, with coordinated baggage handling and smoother connections, eliminating many of the complexities traditionally associated with multi-carrier travel. It also opens up new opportunities for United Nigeria Airlines to expand its route network by leveraging partnerships with established international carriers.
Describing the development as transformative, the airline said its inclusion in the MITA framework represents more than regulatory approval, but a gateway to global operations. It noted that the achievement validates its operational standards and aligns it with international best practices, while enhancing its ability to deliver a more connected and efficient travel experience.
Industry analysts say the development marks a significant step in integrating Nigerian carriers into the global aviation ecosystem, strengthening connectivity for passengers and boosting the country’s attractiveness as a destination for international travel. The move is also expected to support increased inbound traffic, as global travellers gain easier access to Nigerian cities through interline arrangements.
As the airline continues to scale its operations, the MITA entry underscores its ambition to evolve into a competitive player on the international stage, bridging domestic strength with global connectivity while contributing to broader growth in Nigeria’s aviation sector.
