TAAG Angola Airlines has officially taken delivery of its first Airbus A220-300 aircraft, marking a significant milestone in the national carrier’s fleet modernization strategy. The aircraft, registered D2-TAA, arrived from Airbus’ Mirabel facility in Canada and is leased from Air Lease Corporation (ALC). This delivery is part of an order placed during the 2022 Farnborough Airshow, with TAAG aiming to enhance its operations and expand regionally.

The A220-300, configured with 137 seats—12 in business class and 125 in economy—introduces TAAG’s new livery. This design prominently features the Palanca, a black antelope considered a national symbol, on the aircraft’s tail and winglets. The color scheme is inspired by the Samakaka, a traditional Angolan fabric, reflecting the nation’s cultural heritage.

The A220 is the first of six ordered by TAAG, with the airline expanding its commitment to 15 total A220s through additional deals signed at the 2023 Paris Airshow. The aircraft will play a pivotal role in the airline’s plans to establish Luanda as a key north-south and south-south hub in Africa.

Enhancing Passenger Experience and Efficiency

The A220 is purpose-built for the 100-150 seat market, offering passengers a superior flying experience with wide seats, large windows, and high ceilings. The aircraft is capable of flying up to 3,600 nautical miles (6,700 kilometers) non-stop, making it ideal for TAAG’s expanding network of regional routes.

In addition to passenger comfort, the A220 offers significant environmental benefits. It boasts 25% lower fuel consumption and CO2 emissions per seat compared to older aircraft models, while also producing around 40% fewer nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions than industry standards. The A220 is capable of operating with up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), aligning with TAAG’s sustainability goals, as Airbus targets full 100% SAF compatibility for all its aircraft by 2030.

Fleet Expansion and Long-term Growth

The A220’s arrival is just one part of TAAG’s broader fleet renewal. The airline’s current fleet of 23 aircraft includes Boeing 737s, 777s, and Dash 8-400 turboprops. Alongside the A220s, TAAG will also be welcoming Boeing 787 Dreamliners in the near future as part of its long-term expansion plans. The new aircraft will support TAAG’s strategy to provide modern, efficient, and environmentally friendly air travel across Africa and beyond.

TAAG has also partnered with Airbus Flight Hour Services for material management and Skywise Health Monitoring, ensuring efficient maintenance and reducing operational downtime. These partnerships are expected to facilitate a smooth introduction of the A220 into service, further enhancing the airline’s operational capabilities.

With the addition of the A220, TAAG Angola Airlines is positioning itself for growth, modernization, and greater environmental responsibility, offering passengers a state-of-the-art flying experience while contributing to a more sustainable aviation industry.
