TAAG Angola Airlines has taken delivery of its fifth Airbus A220-300 aircraft, reinforcing the carrier’s ongoing fleet renewal drive under its 2024–2029 Strategic Plan. The new jet, registered D2-TAK, arrived on Friday at Dr. António Agostinho Neto International Airport, marking another milestone in the airline’s transformation agenda.

The aircraft has been named “Mbanza Congo,” in line with TAAG’s tradition of celebrating Angola’s national heritage. Mbanza Congo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and former capital of the historic Kingdom of Kongo, holds deep cultural and historical significance in Central Africa. By inscribing the city’s name on the fuselage, the airline continues its practice of positioning each aircraft as a flying ambassador of Angolan identity and pride.

The delivery forms part of a broader roadmap focused on improving operational efficiency, enhancing sustainability, elevating passenger experience and expanding route networks across Africa and selected intercontinental markets. TAAG expects to receive a total of six A220-300 aircraft this year, subject to delivery schedules, as it accelerates the transition to a younger and more competitive fleet aligned with global aviation standards.

Configured to accommodate 137 passengers, including 12 seats in business class and 125 in economy class, the new aircraft is designed to offer enhanced comfort and convenience across both cabins. The A220-300’s advanced aerodynamics and next-generation engine technology deliver lower fuel consumption and reduced CO₂ emissions compared with older-generation aircraft, supporting the airline’s sustainability objectives while improving cost efficiency.

Within TAAG’s network, the A220-300 has already strengthened intra-African connectivity, linking Angola with destinations across Southern, Eastern and Western Africa. The integration of D2-TAK is expected to further optimise regional operations by increasing frequency, reliability and capacity, while providing the flexibility to explore new markets.

As competition intensifies across the African aviation landscape, the continued induction of modern aircraft signals TAAG’s determination to reposition itself among the continent’s leading carriers. The arrival of “Mbanza Congo” underscores the steady execution of that strategy, blending operational modernisation with a strong emphasis on national representation and sustainability.
