With passenger volumes in Nigerian air travel expected to rise, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) is embracing blockchain technology to elevate travel efficiency, transparency, and convenience.

At a recent workshop, Mr. Michael Achimugu, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at NCAA, detailed initiatives supported by Minister Festus Keyamo to improve flight experience, tackle disruptions, and address high fares. By prioritizing technology and consumer protection, the NCAA aims to transform passenger relations with airlines through blockchain’s multifaceted benefits.

Blockchain’s decentralized ledger can solve persistent industry issues, including streamlined passenger identity checks and real-time luggage tracking, which are typically error-prone. The newly launched Centralized Passenger Information Portal (CPIP) leverages blockchain to create a secure, automated platform. Passengers can now verify entitlement to compensation, monitor flight status, and even rebook alternative flights.

NCAA’s Acting Director-General, Capt. Chris Najomo, has championed “quick-fix” interventions to enhance service efficiency, yielding a record 65% satisfaction rate. Consumer Protection Officers now offer improved visibility and support, aiding passengers more effectively.

Blockchain also assists in supporting domestic airlines under a “four-way” partnership: technology, insurance, airlines, and NCAA. This approach allows the NCAA to safeguard passengers’ rights while balancing operators’ operational needs.

According to Mr. Roland Iyayi, the CPIP’s Domestic Network Alliance (DNA) feature helps identify available seats on alternate flights, maximizing capacity and enabling seamless rebooking for stranded passengers. Mr. Saj Abraham, representing Breezetech Technologies, noted that the platform ensures data privacy, reduces congestion, and facilitates faster identity verification.

With an eye on developing Nigerian aviation holistically, the NCAA is adapting blockchain to local needs rather than replicating foreign models. As this initiative unfolds, the NCAA encourages stakeholders to participate in refining this pioneering model for consumer protection in aviation.
