The Federal Government of Nigeria has successfully concluded negotiations with the United Arab Emirates (UAE), setting the stage for the resumption of Emirates Airlines’ flight operations to Nigeria on October 1, 2024. This development marks a significant milestone in strengthening aviation ties between both countries.
Led by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, Nigeria’s technical team engaged in constructive discussions with UAE aviation authorities to ensure the smooth reintroduction of Emirates Airlines into Nigerian airspace. These negotiations also resulted in the creation of a new Bilateral Air Service Agreement (BASA) between Nigeria and the UAE.
One of the key outcomes of the talks was the agreement on reciprocal rights, which will allow Nigerian airlines, including Air Peace, to resume direct flight operations to the UAE. This is expected to enhance international connectivity and provide more travel options for passengers between the two nations.
“We are pleased to have secured reciprocal operational rights for Nigerian airlines, which will not only deepen our bilateral ties but also strengthen the global competitiveness of Nigeria’s aviation industry,” said Keyamo. “Today’s discussions reaffirm our commitment to fostering a balanced and forward-looking partnership with the UAE.”
The agreement follows weeks of diplomatic and technical consultations aimed at restoring direct air travel between the two countries. The resumption of Emirates flights will be significant for both business and leisure travelers, as it reconnects the popular Lagos-Dubai route.
Emirates Airlines’ Deputy President and Chief Commercial Officer, Adnan Kazim, expressed excitement about the return to Nigeria, stating, “We are excited to resume our services to Nigeria. The Lagos-Dubai service has traditionally been popular with customers in Nigeria, and we look forward to reconnecting travelers to our network of over 140 destinations.”
This renewed partnership, alongside the new BASA, is anticipated to boost tourism, business, and cultural exchanges, contributing to economic growth for both nations.
