The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has officially sanctioned Air Peace, Ethiopian Airlines, Royal Air Maroc, Arik Air, and Aero Contractors for various infractions, issuing letters of sanctions to the affected airlines.
Michael Achimugu, NCAA’s Director for Consumer Protection and Public Affairs, confirmed the development, stating, “Yesterday, the five airlines received their letters of sanctions officially.”
The regulatory agency is also considering additional penalties, with ongoing investigations into the airlines’ operations. “Apart from this first set of sanctions, we are still gathering evidence and monitoring the officials to be able to come down harder on them. We are considering a record fine of N200 million for chronic infractions,” Achimugu added.
Weeks ago, the NCAA warned airlines that failing to process passenger refunds within the time frame specified in Part 19 of the NCAA Regulations 2023 would lead to penalties. Following a surge in passenger complaints, the authority took enforcement action against the five airlines, citing unprofessional conduct and regulatory breaches.
Among the measures taken, the NCAA plans to fine Royal Air Maroc up to N300 million for alleged violations, including failure to meet regulatory standards. The agency is also considering what could be the largest sanction in Nigeria’s aviation history against the airline.
