The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), in collaboration with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), has commenced a five-day national quality control workshop aimed at strengthening aviation security oversight across Nigeria.
The workshop, which began on Monday, July 21, 2025, at the NCAA Lagos Regional Office, is part of Nigeria’s strategic response to findings from ICAO’s Universal Security Audit Programme–Continuous Monitoring Approach (USAP-CMA) audit conducted in March 2024. It aims to align Nigeria’s aviation security framework with global best practices.
Speaking on behalf of the Director General of Civil Aviation, Capt. Chris Najomo, the NCAA Lagos Regional Manager, Barrister Olubukola Aduragbemi Teriba, described the training as a critical step toward addressing gaps in Nigeria’s aviation security systems and ensuring compliance with ICAO’s Annex 17 standards.
“This workshop is designed not only to build capacity but to enable stakeholders develop actionable strategies that strengthen quality control measures, enhance risk-based security management, and improve crisis response mechanisms,” Capt. Najomo said.
ICAO’s Regional Aviation Security Officer for West and Central Africa, Mr. Ademola Oladele, also spoke at the event. He stressed Nigeria’s strategic importance as one of Africa’s most active aviation hubs and reiterated ICAO’s commitment to supporting NCAA in building robust and resilient security oversight.
“Nigeria’s aviation sector plays a vital regional role. Enhancing its AVSEC oversight is both a national priority and a continental necessity,” Oladele said.
The workshop brought together key aviation security stakeholders, including the NCAA’s AVSEC Director, Dr. Ben Omogo, officials from the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), representatives of commercial airlines, and technical staff from the NCAA AVSEC department.
The training is expected to result in stronger national compliance with ICAO security standards and improved preparedness for future audits, ultimately reinforcing Nigeria’s aviation security architecture against emerging global threats.
