The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) has inaugurated its Aviation Monitoring Committee for the 2026 Hajj operations, marking the formal commencement of preparations for the aviation component of next year’s pilgrimage.
The inauguration, held at the Commission’s Board Room, Hajj House, Abuja, was presided over by the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Professor Abdullahi Saleh Usman.
In a statement by the Chairman’s Technical Assistant (Media), Ahmad Muazu, Professor Usman described the committee as a functional and non-decorative body, reflecting NAHCON’s zero-tolerance for failure and its commitment to ensuring the comfort, safety, and welfare of Nigerian pilgrims.
He said the Nigerian Government, under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, regards facilitating the Hajj pilgrimage as not merely a statutory duty but a sacred trust, adding that the Commission is committed to ensuring that every pilgrim performs their spiritual obligations in comfort and safety.
Acknowledging steady improvements in the Commission’s airlift logistics, the NAHCON boss noted that aviation remains the most sensitive and visible aspect of Hajj operations. He described the committee members as gatekeepers entrusted with safeguarding pilgrims’ welfare through effective monitoring of aviation activities.
In his remarks, the Commissioner of Operations and Licensing, Prince Anofi Olanrewaju Elegushi, thanked the Chairman for the confidence reposed in the team and assured that the committee would execute its mandate with diligence and dedication.
The committee’s responsibilities include reviewing and evaluating documents submitted by airlines and cargo carriers, assessing the readiness of designated airports, monitoring outbound and inbound flights, ensuring compliance with luggage and safety standards, and recommending sanctions against erring carriers or state pilgrim boards. It will also liaise with relevant security agencies and committees as required.
Professor Usman charged members to carry out their duties with integrity, patriotism, and professionalism, emphasizing that the success of the 2026 Hajj operations depends on their commitment. He expressed confidence in their expertise and described the assignment as a sacred duty to the Nigerian Muslim community.
