Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria Managing Director, Olubunmi Kuku, has revealed that Murtala Muhammed International Airport recorded the fastest air traffic growth among Africa’s leading airports in 2025, underscoring Nigeria’s rising prominence in continental aviation.
Speaking at the ACI Africa Regional Conference and Exhibition in Luanda, Kuku said Lagos airport achieved an 11.8 per cent increase in air traffic movements, placing it ahead of other major hubs across the continent. The airport also posted a 34.4 per cent rise in cargo volumes, the highest growth rate among Africa’s top ten cargo airports.
She further disclosed that Nigeria’s aviation market continues to expand significantly, with the country now ranking as Africa’s second-largest domestic passenger market, handling over 10.5 million passengers and recording a 10 per cent year-on-year growth, based on data from the Official Airline Guide.
Kuku noted that the performance reflects growing demand for air travel, increased airline activity, and improving airport operations across Nigeria’s key gateways. She added that both Lagos and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport ranked among the top ten airports in Africa for domestic passenger traffic, further highlighting the country’s scale and influence in regional aviation.
According to her, the figures signal not just growth in passenger numbers but also the strengthening of Nigeria’s position as a critical hub for air transport, cargo logistics, and regional connectivity.
