The Federal Government has reignited optimism for a national air carrier and modernized airports under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope” agenda. Dr. Ibrahim Abubakar Kana, the newly appointed Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, made this commitment during his assumption of duty in Abuja.
Dr. Kana pledged to work alongside the Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, to actualize Nigeria Air and upgrade airports to international standards. He highlighted the need for public-private partnerships to overcome resource constraints, emphasizing innovation and collaboration as critical drivers of progress in the aviation sector.
“Resources are scarce, and we need to embrace the private sector to support Nigeria’s aviation industry,” Kana stated. He assured Nigerians of his dedication to delivering a national carrier and transforming airports into efficient, world-class transit hubs.
This announcement comes after numerous failed attempts to revive a national airline following the liquidation of Nigeria Airways in 2004 due to mismanagement and debt. Previous initiatives, including Virgin Nigeria, Nigeria Eagle, and Nigeria Air, faced setbacks despite ambitious unveilings, such as the 2018 branding launch of Nigeria Air at the Farnborough Air Show.
Despite past challenges, Kana expressed optimism about achieving the long-anticipated national airline and improving airport infrastructure. He called on aviation agencies and stakeholders to align with the administration’s goals, promising a brighter future for Nigeria’s aviation sector.
Outgoing Permanent Secretary Dr. Emmanuel Meribole encouraged ministry staff to support Dr. Kana, highlighting the importance of continuity and teamwork in achieving success. “No man is perfect, but I have always wished to leave a place better than how I met it,” Meribole noted.
Barrister Adebola Odugbesan, Special Adviser to the Attorney-General of the Federation, lauded Kana as a “bureaucratic soldier” with a leadership style focused on talent development and staff welfare. He urged aviation stakeholders to rally behind Kana’s vision.
With renewed leadership and strategic focus, the Federal Government’s efforts aim to position Nigeria as a leading force in African aviation, fostering economic growth and global connectivity.
