Ethiopian Airlines has announced plans to inaugurate three new domestic airports and commence passenger services to the destinations by mid-April 2026, in a move that will further strengthen air connectivity across the country.
The new airports are located in Negele Borena, Gore Metu and Debre Markos. The airline plans to operate three weekly passenger flights to each destination, increasing its domestic network to 26 routes and reinforcing its position as Africa’s largest network carrier.
Group Chief Executive Officer Mesfin Tasew described the expansion as a significant milestone for both the airline and the nation. He said the inauguration of the airports and the launch of passenger services reflect Ethiopian Airlines’ continued commitment to enhancing connectivity within Ethiopia while serving as a catalyst for economic growth and regional development.
According to Tasew, the airline’s mission is to build an inclusive and integrated air transport network that empowers communities, unlocks economic opportunities and supports national development by making safe, reliable and efficient air travel accessible to all Ethiopians.
The addition of Negele Borena, Gore Metu and Debre Markos underscores the carrier’s broader strategy to modernise and strengthen the domestic travel experience. Ethiopian Airlines has continued to invest in infrastructure renovation and service enhancements as part of efforts to improve operational efficiency and passenger comfort.
The expansion follows the inauguration of Yabello Airport in 2025 as the airline’s 23rd domestic destination, highlighting a steady push to broaden its footprint within Ethiopia. With the new routes set to begin in April 2026, the airline is poised to deepen regional integration and provide improved access to underserved parts of the country.
