Ethiopian Airlines Group has confirmed the purchase of nine Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft, reinforcing its long-term fleet expansion and international growth strategy. The aircraft are scheduled for delivery between 2031 and 2033 and will support the airline’s plans to expand its route network while offering passengers greater flexibility and improved connectivity.
The latest Dreamliner order builds on Ethiopian Airlines’ recent commitment for 11 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft announced at the Dubai Airshow. Finalised in December 2025, the combined acquisition of the 787 and 737 MAX aircraft adds 20 new, fuel-efficient Boeing jets to the airline’s order book.
Commenting on the development, Ethiopian Airlines Group Chief Executive Officer, Mr Mesfin Tasew, said the order reflects the airline’s continued focus on modernising its fleet with advanced and environmentally efficient aircraft. He noted that the additional Dreamliners will strengthen customer service delivery and align with the airline’s broader vision to embrace new technologies and promote sustainable aviation.
Ethiopian Airlines currently operates Africa’s largest fleet of Boeing 787 Dreamliners, deploying its 787-8 and 787-9 aircraft on intercontinental routes from Addis Ababa to major destinations in Europe, Asia and North America, as well as on high-demand intra-African services.
Boeing Vice President of Commercial Sales and Marketing for Africa, Mr Anbessie Yitbarek, said the 787 Dreamliner has transformed long-haul operations worldwide and expressed Boeing’s pride in supporting Ethiopian Airlines’ mission to connect Africa more seamlessly with the rest of the world through efficient and passenger-friendly aircraft.
With the latest agreement, Ethiopian Airlines’ total number of Boeing 787-9 aircraft on order has risen to 20. The carrier also holds firm orders, options and purchase rights for additional Boeing 737 MAX and Boeing 777X aircraft, underscoring its robust long-term fleet planning.
Beyond fleet expansion, Ethiopian Airlines Group is pursuing major infrastructure and modernization projects, including the development of the Bishoftu International Mega Airport City. The project is expected to significantly enhance the airline’s operational capacity and further strengthen its position as a key driver of aviation growth in Africa and on the global stage.
