The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has confirmed that an elderly passenger was deplaned from a commercial aircraft on Wednesday after refusing to comply with a mandatory seat reassignment and allegedly threatening a flight attendant.

The Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at NCAA, Michael Achimugu, disclosed the incident in a statement via his official X handle. He explained that the passenger had been assigned a seat next to the emergency exit, a location reserved under aviation safety regulations for individuals who meet specific physical and behavioral requirements, including the ability and willingness to assist during an emergency.

According to Achimugu, cabin crew informed the passenger of the need to switch seats for safety reasons. However, he “vehemently declined” the request despite repeated explanations. The situation escalated when the passenger allegedly threatened to slap a flight attendant on two occasions.

In response, the aircraft’s pilot alerted airport security and Air Force personnel stationed at the airport to intervene. NCAA Consumer Protection Officers were also brought on board in an effort to de-escalate the matter.

“After due discussions, the passenger was informed that, owing to his refusal to comply with safety protocols and his threats against cabin crew, the pilot had exercised his authority not to allow him remain on the flight,” Achimugu said.

The passenger was escorted back to the terminal by security and NCAA officials. Authorities later confirmed that he calmed down, acknowledged the seriousness of his actions, and will be allowed to travel on a later flight the same day.

Achimugu emphasized the importance of mutual respect and cooperation between passengers and crew, warning that threats or acts of violence on board will not be tolerated.

“Threats of violence against cabin crew are unacceptable. The safety and comfort of all passengers must be a shared priority. While airlines have a duty to provide quality service, passengers are strongly encouraged to follow crew instructions and, if dissatisfied, file formal complaints through the NCAA’s Consumer Protection Department at cpd.ncaa.gov.ng,” he stated.
