A Qatar Airways passenger has given the airline a 14-day ultimatum to recover his allegedly missing luggage or pay ₦11.8 million in compensation for its contents, raising fresh concerns over baggage handling and passenger rights.
The demand was made through Lagos-based Brown & Cooper Solicitors on behalf of Mr. Peter Omopariola Fowoyo, who claimed one of his three checked bags disappeared after he travelled on Qatar Airways Flight QR1407 from Doha to Lagos on June 27, 2026.
According to the law firm, Fowoyo checked in three bags at Doha before departure, but only two were delivered upon arrival at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos. After waiting for several hours at the baggage carousel, he reportedly discovered that the remaining unclaimed suitcase did not belong to him.
The passenger immediately reported the incident to officials of the Nigeria Aviation Handling Company (NAHCO), where he completed a Property Irregularity Report (PIR) and was assured that efforts would be made to trace the missing luggage.
However, Brown & Cooper Solicitors alleged that despite repeated follow-up, the airline has yet to locate or return the missing bag.
The law firm claimed the missing medium-sized black suitcase contained valuables estimated at ₦11.812 million, including 3,000 US dollars in cash, two gold wristwatches, medication, clothing, footwear and other personal effects.
According to the solicitors, receipts for many of the items were also inside the missing luggage, making it impossible for their client to provide documentary proof of purchase.
In its demand letter dated July 25, 2026, the firm called on Qatar Airways to either recover and return the luggage with its contents intact or pay ₦11.812 million, representing the alleged value of the missing items, within 14 days.
The solicitors warned that failure to comply with the demand would leave their client with no option but to commence legal proceedings against the airline without further notice.
As of the time of filing this report, Qatar Airways had not issued any public response to the allegations or the compensation demand.
