The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) has suspended its proposed increase in navigational charges following a directive from the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo. This decision, announced in a statement by Abdullahi Musa, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at NAMA, comes in response to the Minister’s recognition of the current economic challenges faced by Nigerians and the need for further consultation before implementing such significant changes.
NAMA’s Managing Director, Engr. Farouk Ahmed Umar, had previously justified the proposed increase during the 28th Annual Conference of the League of Airports and Aviation Correspondents (LAAC) in Lagos. He cited mounting financial pressures due to global economic volatility, fuel price hikes, and currency instability. The planned fee hike, set to take effect from September 1st, would have resulted in an 1800% increase for en-route charges and a 900% increase for terminal navigation charges.
Engr. Farouk emphasized that the additional revenue was essential for maintaining the safety and efficiency of Nigeria’s airspace. He noted that NAMA relies on statutory fees and charges as its primary source of revenue and expressed concerns about the agency’s ability to sustain operations without the proposed increase. Specifically, the new unit rate/minimum charge for en-route services was set to rise to 18,000 Naira from 2,000 Naira per flight, while the unit rate/minimum charge for terminal navigation (TCN domestic) was set to increase to 54,000 Naira from 6,000 Naira.
Despite the financial pressures, the Minister’s intervention underscored the government’s sensitivity to the economic challenges faced by the Nigerian populace. He stressed the importance of being considerate of these challenges and emphasized the need for a more equitable relationship between NAMA and the airlines.
NAMA has maintained its stance as a cost-recovery agency in line with global practices and has called for continued engagement with stakeholders to find a sustainable solution. The agency has also indicated its intention to foster collaboration and partnerships, improve operational efficiency, embrace innovation, and strengthen infrastructure to ensure the safety and efficiency of Nigeria’s airspace.
The suspension of the planned fee hike reflects the government’s commitment to addressing public concerns and balancing economic sustainability with the needs of its citizens.
